About Me

I am a Malaysian student studying abroad; pursuing a dual major in Economics, and Politics and International Relations at Scripps College. Prior to this project, I conducted a research project in summer 2008 comparing and contrasting the state of development in three Orang Asli villages in Cameron Highlands and Gopeng, Perak.

I have had the privilege of working/volunteering for the following causes: providing resources to higher education for students from marginalized low-income communities, working with survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation, increasing awareness of educational opportunities outside Malaysia (particularly in the US), and fostering a safe space for the Asian/Asian-American community in a predominantly-white educational institution.

I, like most of the Malaysians I surveyed, miss food from home. I agree with Tolkien: “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”

Oh, right now you’re only a student, and wondering if you want to return to Malaysia. Wait until you work abroad, paying their income taxes and sales tax for every basic life necessities. Then you will feel differently.

I’ve been overseas since 2000. The last 2 years I’ve been missing Malaysia very much. Especially after my father passed away and I never got to go home for his funeral.

Malaysia is not perfect, but home is truly where the heart is.
Believe it or not, I feel your pain.
