I am a Malaysian student studying abroad; pursuing a dual major in Economics, and Politics and International Relations at Scripps College. Prior to this project, I conducted a research project in summer 2008 comparing and contrasting the state of development in three Orang Asli villages in Cameron Highlands and Gopeng, Perak.
I have had the privilege of working/volunteering for the following causes: providing resources to higher education for students from marginalized low-income communities, working with survivors of sex trafficking and exploitation, increasing awareness of educational opportunities outside Malaysia (particularly in the US), and fostering a safe space for the Asian/Asian-American community in a predominantly-white educational institution.
I, like most of the Malaysians I surveyed, miss food from home. I agree with Tolkien: “If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world.”
